My Top Ten Reads of 2014 (& Happy New Year!)

my top ten reads 2014 - Copy

I wanted to share my top ten reads for 2014. I went back and forth but finally decided I should only mention books actually published in 2014. It just made things simple. But if you must know, I would have included Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, and Wild Justice by Kelley Armstrong if not for the 2014 publish date rule.

#1. Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews

If I was going to have a book-threesome, it would be with Kate and Curran. Don’t look at me that way, we were all thinking it, I just had the guts to say it! The Kate Daniels series is so amazing in every way. And Magic Breaks only continued the awesomeness! You guys know by now that I am a big fan of this series and of Ilona Andrews. The wife/husband writing team bang out the best dialogue and action scenes you will ever read. You will laugh your ass off the whole book, you may even cry a little, and love every minute of it.

#2. Black Widow by Jennifer Estep

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

I was getting nervous with the Elemental Assassin series because the last few books were just okay. Then Jennifer Estep blew my mind with Black Widow. I was glued to the pages because every second was so effing exciting! This book revived the series for me.

#3. Tangled by Emma Chase

A few blogger friends had been hounding me to read Tangled because it was “my kind of book.” And how right they were. The main character, Drew, is the ultimate lovable douche. He’s cocky, rude, but damn is he tenacious and fun. It’s so rare to get such an in-depth view into a male’s mind. Very enlightening…and cringe-worthy.

#4. Five Ways to Fall by K.A. Tucker

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

I love the Ten Tiny Breaths series and Five Ways to Fall was my fav book by far. Why? Because it wasn’t so much a love story as it was a fuck-buddy story. Feelings grow, of course, but there is no marriage or babies in the end. Just two people having a good time and then deciding to try a relationship out. The story felt real and the characters felt real.

#5. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

I felt really good with how the Shatter Me series ended with Ignite Me. As always, Tahereh Mafi has the most beautiful, lyrical writing style ever. How she could have me hating a character in one book and then falling in love with him the next, it still boggles the mind. The whole series surprised me and had me craving more with each page.

#6. Take Me On by Katie McGarry

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

Katie McGarry always delivers the most stressful but intense storylines, and it was no different with Take Me On. I am really getting into sport romances, and Take Me On had kickboxing in it which was awesome! The feels were the best. They killed me but it was a sweet death.

#7. The Foul Mouth and the Headless Hunny by Richard Raley

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

First off, you would have to read the whole King Henry Tapes series for this book to work for you. And I would highly suggest you do because Richard Raley is a genius. His writing style is odd but hilarious. Anyone who wants to try something different can head this way. The Foul Mouth and the Headless Hunny was a great addition to the series.

#8. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

I wasn’t so sure about The Kiss of Deception at first, but by the end I was 100% hooked. It had fantastical history, romance, and assassins. Who could want more? Mary Pearson was even able to trick me big time. I never saw what was coming, and I was dumbfounded when it did.

#9. Thrive by Krista and Becca Ritchie

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

I loved the Addicted series from the beginning. It was so different. An alcoholic and sex addict falling in love? Yeah, can anyone say drama! Thrive is the continuation of Lo and Lily’s crazy, messed up story. These two are so fucked up you can’t help but root for them. And the side characters are amazing too. This is like my dream new adult type book.

#10. On the Fence by Kasie West

Review | Amazon | Goodreads

On the Fence is a slow YA romance and it was the most adorable love story I have read in a long time. It’s a great mix of heavy and light. It’s a little like a coming of age story but so much more.

I hope everyone has an amazing new year! 2015 Baby!

Happy New Year! Your number 8 would definitely be on my list. I didn’t really like Ignite Me as an ending to the trilogy but the whole story was very poetic.

    • Jennifer Bielman

Sorry to hear Ignite Me didn’t work for you but yes, the whole story was very poetic.

  2. Christy

I regret not adding On the Fence to my list because it really deserved to be there. I need to read the 2nd book in the Elemental series. I’ll probably do that sometime this month. Gah, I need to read Ten Tiny Breaths. Actually, I still need to read the 2nd book.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Jennifer! Btw, do you already have You by Caroline Kepnes? I can’t remember. It’s only $1.99 right now, so get it if you don’t. I’m requiring you to read it! 😉

    • Jennifer Bielman

WHAT!!! How have you not read Ten Tiny Breaths!!!!??? Or the whole series for that matter.

Happy new year to you too. I actually did get You when it was on sale last time. I am so excited to read it.

  3. Melliane

yay a great list! I loved some of them and I still need to discover the others but thanks for sharing! Happy new year lady!

  4. Jaclyn Canada

I love all the different genres you have here. I am most looking forward to reading Magic Breaks and Ignite Me. I feel like I really didn’t get many books read this year since I spent a while re-reading old loves. Happy New Year!!!

  5. kimbacaffeinate

Awesome list Jennifer. I am all caught up on Kate Daniels and love this friggin series so hard. I am listening to the current Alpha and Omega series and loving them as well. You need to read Red Rising. Several of your books made my top tens. I am back from my bloggy break and feeling renewed. Thanks for your comments while I was recharging. Hugs and Happy New Year!

    • Jennifer Bielman

Happy you feel recharged. And I am extatic that you fell in love with Andrews books like I have.

Unfortunately, by kinda blogger break was forced because I have been sick for the past week. I am still sick. Ugh!

  6. Molly Mortensen

I had to make a 2014 publishing rule to narrow it down too. I really should try a book by Andrews. I saw Black Widow on a couple of top lists of the year. I just got Shatter Me I need to read that series already! Kiss of Deception is on my list for books I missed! I wasn’t sure about the whole assassin prince thing.

I hope you are having a wonderful new year too!

    • Jennifer Bielman

Wow, just reading Shatter Me. You are behind. lol. You are going to have so much fun with that trilogy though. And Andrews is the best!

  7. Olivia

It sounds like you were able to read a lot of good books this year! I know one of these that I really want to read is Kiss of Deception, and I have seen a lot of positive reviews for it. I am glad you loved it so.
