Passion and lust ignite. Dark and light battle. This explosive first installment of the Broken Bonds series sets the exhilarating pace for a cat and mouse game where no one knows who’s really pulling the strings.

Criminal profiler Sadie Bonds knows blood. Her affair with the gruesome, dark world of killers began long before she started applying her analytical skills to investigate gory crime scenes. She gets inside the killers’ heads, breaks them down, relates to them on an arcane level. She prefers it this way—because it’s safer to ally herself with the villain than the victim. At least, that’s how she’s coped ever since she was abducted and tortured as a teen.

She will never be a victim again.

Now, she’s honed her skills in order to bring justice to these ritualistic offenders. Working alongside her colleagues, armed with sharp wit and a SIG, Sadie always catches her sadist. Until one ruthless serial killer gets inside Sadie’s head, turning the tables. He knows her secrets. Her obsessions. The darkest, most deviant part of her soul.

When she meets Colton Reed, dangerous stakes are raised as he threatens to unravel her control and reveal her darkest fantasies. The sexy-as-sin bondage rigger at an exclusive BDSM club pushes her boundaries, forcing her to acknowledge that side of herself she fears. Plunged into a realm of torture and suffering, pain and pleasure, Sadie balances on the razor-sharp edge of two intersecting worlds threatening to swallow her.

I've been a bad bird. This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years old due to its use of sexual content, substance use, and/or violence. Come be a bad bird with me!

At A Glance

So dark, so messed up, so yummy.

The Good

So, this is all Christy’s fault. She got me to read With Visions of Red and I blame her for the dirty/scary thoughts she has put into my mind by forcing me to read this book. Like gun to my head force. I was in no position to deny her. If you read her blog, you’d know what I mean. The shit she reads! She scares me. 😉

So we have this fucked up serial killer/rapist who messed with my mind the whole book. Every time we got to see the world and his victims through his eyes, I was both excited and sickened. I’m I the only one who has this fear of reading about a psychopath and agreeing with some of his points or seeing his logic? Oh, that’s just me? Never mind. *coughs* Seriously, this killer is all about the pain, blood, and screams. Logic and compassion have not touched this asshat for some time, or ever. That’s why I liked him so much! 😀

Sadie has gone through some shit. The kind of stuff that would have left me numb and drooling in a corner the rest of my life. But she took her horrible past and decided to use her knowledge of sadistic killers and help bring them to justice. Yay Sadie! You go girl! Now, that’s not saying she isn’t a little messed up from what happened to her but she hides it well. Until Colton walks into her life with some rope and all too knowing eyes. He sees the real Sadie and he likes what he sees, maybe a little too much. Colton was an odd duck. I am still unsure what to think about him, but I had to give him props for his rope work. He can tie up a body to perfection.

The mystery had me chomping at the bit. The characters are all so gloriously effed up there is no way you can be bored with this one. I just wanted more!

The Bad

I wish Sadie had more control over herself when around Colton. Obviously the stuff that happened to her has made her vulnerable in some areas but I just don’t like the excuse of “I can’t help myself.” It seems too convenient.

I didn’t mind the cliffhanger, but I did mind that the book stopped in the middle of the story. That wasn’t an ending, that was an incomplete book.

The Snuggly

So dark, so tingly. The sex is kind of messed up because of the situation, but I loved it. There is a lot of bondage and rough play. The peek inside that world was intriguing to say the least. Oh, and there is rape, though not much detail, so be prepared.

Final Thoughts

Wow. Well, that got me out of my reading slump. I can’t wait to read the next book because that cliffhanger was killer. We are just getting into the good stuff! Very, highly recommended.

Quotes

“Obsession. It starts with a spark. A flicker. At the strike of a match. Lying dormant in most of us, obsession feasts on the fumes, breathes in the smoky scent, curing around and in on itself. Building. We pet it, nurse it into existence. It is ours. All ours. A coveted perfection. And when it refuses to be ignored, it rages. It roars to life. A building inferno. Consuming. We are but pawns to its deceptive power. Though we attempt to guide it, caress it tenderly into a loving beauty, it can not be controlled. It’s a haunted, vengeful lover. Like a wildfire devouring life within it’s path, we can only follow it’s carnal trail.”

“I now know what evil lurks where even the light is afraid to shine.”

Okay, we get it, I’m creepy as fuck. But you’re sitting in the handbasket to hell right next to me, so enjoy the ride. 😛

  2. Red Iza

Naomi tricked me into buying it too, she’s devious like that too 😉 And I got the whole three books, so no cliffhanger for me, he he ^^

Wow! Great review! Dark and yummy? Gimme gimme. While I’m not really into rough and bondage, this one seems intriguing and I like complex and flawed characters. Going to pick this one up soon 🙂

Glade your out of your reading slump. I am not against being a bad bird, but this one may be a little too messed up for me. Yet.

humm not sure that this is something I would ever read, for personal reasons, but it’s cool to come out and read something different once in a while.
