Hell is looking for a way to break loose…
Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world’s first murderer, he’s plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it’s killing him.
After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can’t outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she’s thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she’s been trying to forget.
Sam strains Jax’s control over his darkness, but running isn’t an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.

Ruined was okay. I found myself putting this book down a lot but I was interested to see how it would all turn out.
The concept was really interesting. It had bible/religious aspects but it didn’t feel religious at all. It helped that I almost always like books with demons in it. I am so a demon/assassin/werewolf girl. Give me one of those, and I am good to go. The tension was also great. The whole damn book is full of tension and mystery. And you will NOT know who the bad guys are until the very end. I was SHOCKED!
I loved and hated Jax. He was so strong and kind but he also played the martyr too often. But it was Samantha that I loved. She was even stronger and kinder than Jax. She had an amazing heart but also a fighter attitude that never let Jax give up on them. I loved her determination that she held onto throughout the whole book.
I feel like I am in a book slump. I am just not finding the books I have been reading lately to be anything more than average. And that’s what Ruined was, average. The biggest problem was that I was bored for about half the book. I put this book down a lot. Not enough was going on for me to scratch someone’s eyes out to get back to it. But more than anything, the beginning was rocky and the ending was lackluster.
Jax got on my last nerve quite often. He was too much of a martyr for me. The ‘poor me’ attitude was too much. To Jax: Stop being a pussycat minus the cat and grow a pair. Take charge, stop letting the demon and insecurities win! End of rant.
The sexual tension was banging!!! If you are looking for a book with amazing sexual tension, this is the book for you. Ruined oozed sex. Jax and Sam just had this spark that melted the pages. I loved them together, but Jax needed to get his head out of his ass.
There was sexual content and a sex scene that was pretty steamy but still new adult.
I will continue this series, but if book #2 is another 3 starer I might give up. I don’t want to read averageness. But I think this series deserves another chance. I do think this is worth the read overall. I could see people loving Ruined for sure. Different books hit people differently. Recommended.
“Even then, so early in my life, I saw pieces of myself mirrored in her eyes. Lost. Alone. Separated. Ruined. It was another one of those defining moments. I’d known, even then, that this girl would play a monumental role in my life.”
“Doesn’t matter that you won’t admit it,” she continued. “The truth is, you’re a good man-not a demon-and I love you. I’ve always loved you.” Warmth enveloped me as she placed her hand on the side of my face. “Always been in love with you.”
“Love you?” he whispered at my ear. Breath warm and voice a deep, velvety whisper. “I fu**ing breathe you. Your face, your laugh, the way you chew at your bottom lip…All of it. All of you. Any light you think you see in me is an echo of you.”
