I Do What I Want #2: Cheater, Cheater, Pumpkin Eater!

Sometimes I just want to talk about random crap. No theme, no rules, just…whatever. That’s what I Do What I Want posts are for. This is where I…well, do whatever the hell I want. Enjoy…and be very afraid.

So, I lost faith in humanity today (over-exaggeration). It was such a stupid thing that did it though. I try to be the kind of person that doesn’t get bothered by trivial things, but anything that is unjust pisses me off.

I work for Tutorial Services at a college. My boss is really cool and decided to run an art contest for tutors and staff (I am part of the staff). Just a silly/fun thing to change it up, and the winner gets a Starbucks gift card. I entered a piece. Nothing amazing, just some charcoal and conte crayon. The theme was spring flowers. Now, there is this artist who most of us think is going to win, and that’s totally fair. His piece is really cool. But in the end, it comes down to everyone’s personal tastes.

The contest is supposed to be anonymous. We have numbers on each paper and we are not suppose to reveal our work to anyone. Again, the voting (anyone in the whole school can vote) is suppose to be which piece that person likes the most, like their personal preference. I think this helps most of us who entered get a few votes in instead of the votes only going to “the best artist” or whoever is more “popular”.

So I find out today that a tutor, someone I recommended to get hired, is cheating. Yeah, cheating at a silly art contest for $25 at Starbucks. She is telling droves and droves of people to come and vote for her number. Now, I have made sure, to the best of my ability, that no one reveals their numbers to anyone (at least during work). It seems like everyone is playing fair so far. I have had people ask me which number is mine so they can vote for me and I don’t tell them. It’s wrong. It’s not fair to the other contestants who entered. We should all get an equal, fair chance to win.

gif life's not fair

Well, that’s not happening now because this person is apparently so hard up for a Starbucks card that they have to cheat to win. I only noticed it today when groups of people would come in and ask to vote, but never looked at the art. I started asking questions, and they told me how this tutor was asking everyone around school to vote only for her number, which is against the rules. Sure, I knew this was a possibility when the contest first started, but really? REALLY?

Do I need a Starbucks card? No. I would have given it to my mom anyways. Not a big fan of Starbucks. But you know what? It’s unfair to the tutor who is a real artist (that I made sure he didn’t reveal his number to anyone) to lose to a cheater like her. Or anyone else who put effort into their piece.

I confronted the cheater and she just laughed. I probably would have gotten into it with her if I was not already late for class and now I wont see her again until after the contest is over, the contest she are obviously going to win.

Seriously, I know it’s stupid but this whole situation pisses me off. Why do the “bad” people always win? It’s not fair. Why do the people with morals get screwed?

The only thing I am taking away from this is that I will NEVER join in on a fun little contest at work/school again. I don’t want to be upset over stupid stuff like this, so I need to remove myself from it all together.

That is all.

I get what you mean, it’s like those singing competition where people ring in to vote for the person to win or stay in the game. It then becomes a game of popularity not true talent right?

  2. Ashley

Oh my god that is SO HORRIBLE!! I totally get why you’re worked up over it.

I really DESPISE any competition that’s based on popularity, and that’s exactly what she turned it into.

For example, this isn’t cheating because the contest was like this, but there are these UK Blog Awards that I thought would be cool to enter. I like the idea of someone objectively looking at all these blogs and deciding which one is best or most helpful or whatever. But the first round was NOT based on a panel of judges deciding which ones they think are best. The first round is based on you getting as many people to vote for you as possible.

At that point it’s not actually about which blog is the best, but it’s about who spent the most time asking other people to vote for them.

I always fail massively at contests like that because I disagree with them so fundamentally. I don’t believe that you actually get real results that way, so I don’t go out asking people to vote for me.

Yeah, that’s ridiculous. Why can’t we just have a good old fashion contest that’s fair and based on skills or something.

  3. Carrie

Wow. That is unfair. She’ll get hers someday. Karma can be a real bitch and she watches out for people like her. You should post a pic of your art, I’d love to see it. I’m a huge fan of art, dabble a bit myself, but not contest worthy. 😉

    • Jennifer Bielman

I usually believe in karma so I am hoping. And you reminded me, I need to take a picture of my work, lol.

  4. Caro @ The Book Rogue

That is so not fair, I feel you. But since confronting her did not work, why not band together with the other contestants who feel cheated and ask your boss to remove the cheater from the contest? That would only be fair, right? And if you really want to make it stuck, maybe teach her a lesson (although I doubt it works on ppl like her) don’t tell her about it, but announce that one piece (hers) had to be withdrawn and all it’s votes are void — just before you annouce the real winner. Oh, I’d so pay to see that!

    • Jennifer Bielman

I actually told my boss. She just blew it off, which sucked. That’s why I wash my hands of the whole thing.

      • Caro @ The Book Rogue

How can she just brush it off? That’s not very fair, either. If she doesn’t care about a the competition, she shouldn’t bring it up in the first place. Frus-Tra-Ting! … Well, nothing you can do about it. Just wait for Karma to do her business, she will.

        • Jennifer Bielman

Yeah, I was surprised. Next time she brings up a competition I am going to suggest not doing it since no one is going to want to enter once they found out about the cheating.

  5. Lekeisha

See, that’s that bull s**t right there! I should’ve waited until I got off work to read this. Now, I’m in full b***h mode. That was just wrong and I really want to smack her. I’m not even a violent person and I really just need to hit something. I’m sorry that you all couldn’t enjoy a fun contest without someone acting childish.

    • Jennifer Bielman

That’s how I felt. I want to hit something so bad, still.

  6. kindlemom1

It really is bad that someone feels they have to cheat to win and it really does ruin the fun for everyone else. 🙁
*hugs* Sorry they are being such a butthead about it. I hope they lose.

    • Jennifer Bielman

They picked the winner Friday but I don’t know who won yet. I’ll know Monday. But at this point I just don’t care.

  7. anna (herding cats & burning soup)

Oh what a slimy girl! She should be disqualified over that. I just don’t understand people like that or that enter blog giveaways but lie in them. Really?? Or the vote your favorite author polls (I refuse to vote in them anymore because someone always cheats). So frustrating. And not stupid at all to be annoyed or upset when people behave that way. If they’re going it over little things they’re surely going to do it on bigger things too.

    • Jennifer Bielman

That’s what I think. This small cheating is a gateway to bigger, worse things.

  8. kimbacaffeinate

That is not really a win. She apparently has zero confidence in her own worth. I loathe cheaters but I wouldn’t let it stop you from participating.

    • Jennifer Bielman

I just fell like what’s the point? The cheater is going to win obviously. Why put myself in a position to get upset by it? You know?

  9. Liza Barrett

Man, that’s really annoying — I don’t blame you for being so upset. I think it’s just sad to see people so hard-up for a confidence boost that they turn a simple art contest into such a big deal. Hopefully it works itself out in the end? :/

    • Jennifer Bielman

Yeah, it was such a fun, little contest that we all had a good time voting for until her.

  10. Braine

Rat the bitch out! Out her! Desperate mofo! It’s the principle, not the free frappe.

I get annoyed by people like that too. So afraid to lose, so prideful to always want to be a winner.

    • Jennifer Bielman

I actually told my boss but she didn’t seem to really care. Which sucked.

  11. Manisha

It really puts you off when the real talent fails to win just because someone found a glitch in the system or has cheated.

  12. tonyalee

That is so horribly immature it’s almost funny. (in an ironic kind of way) I don’t understand people – never will I’m sure – and why they do these things. Maybe it wasn’t for the gift card, per se, but bragging rights? Either way, how horrible.

  13. Bookish Glamma

Oh my gosh, Jennifer! That is beyond pathetic. Having this happen at a school makes it all that much sadder. I hate to think about the example that this person is setting.

    • Jennifer Bielman

LOL. I know. I got lucky. No one picked a winner on Friday when I wasn’t there so I got to count the votes today. She only got 3rd place, even with cheating. That’s what you get bitch!

  14. Melissa (My World...in words and pages)

Hey, I’d be pissed and upset myself. I agree with you.

But…would you mind sharing your artwork with us after the contest is done? 🙂

  15. Jaclyn Canada

I would’ve been in the same boat as you. Entering because it’s fun and art so why not. And I can’t stand winning through cheating so I’d have been fair and made sure everyone else was too. Sucks, art has never been about popularity but what speaks to each individual. I would’ve given my Starbucks card to my sister LOL. She’s the one obsessed with it and I have never liked coffee. Karma will come around to her.

    • Jennifer Bielman

I like coffee but not Starbucks, lol. Well, you will be happy to know that the cheater didn’t win. 🙂

  16. Olivia

Even reading through this post was enough to make me seriously annoyed at that person. I mean, it’s just supposed to be a small little enjoyable contest and those people who might’ve actually stood a chance at winning now can’t. Ugh. I feel your pain.

    • Jennifer Bielman

It is sssooooo stupid. Why, just why? Why ruin this contest. Well, luckily she didn’t win.
