So, I was sitting here thinking about I wanted to post about, and all of a sudden I hear fireworks going off outside. Not unusual since Independence Day is coming up, for us Americans. Sometimes they are annoying because some sound like gunshots and it scares the crap out of me, but in general I don’t mind my neighbors setting off fireworks. My few pets throughout the years never had a problem with them so I’m good on that front. They don’t usually set them off after 12am and that’s usually the time I go to bed, so no keeping me up. So, yeah, I’m chill with all the fireworks going off around me.
This got me thinking about other possible holiday annoyances. Like kids coming to your front door on Halloween. Some kids can be little shits but in general I like decorating my house all scary-like and creeping out the kids. Giving out candy and diabetes. It’s a blast. Then there is Christmas and the millions of people shopping all at the same time, for months! I kind of like it. It’s comforting in a way. Thanksgiving and food hangovers that lead to next-day, amazing turkey sandwiches that you would kill for. Though I don’t like the family coming together crap. That shit is annoying. Oh, and Easter! I love sweating in the heat, having a panic attack from the adrenaline and competitiveness, trying to beat everyones’ asses by finding those eggs first! Love it!
Holidays have lost some of their pizzazz and importance as I’ve gotten older but I still love them. I like the things that could easily be annoying. I find the crappy parts somewhat comforting.

LOL ~ I friggin’ love your posts! You are too funny.
Pretty much all of the same annoyances for me. Our neighbours set off fireworks for Canada Day (July 1st). We love them, but the dogs get all freaked out and bark and shake and go on.
Then Halloween we have to buy candy and crap for the little Halloweenies and then they don’t show up… but if I don’t buy stuff… I’ll have a ton of angry kids with soap and crap bombs.
Thanksgiving isn’t too bad but I’m not a Turkey fan. I hear you about all the family gathering thing. Christmas is awesome except for a ton of shoppers getting in my friggin’ way and all the sadness of missed loved ones.
My favourite holiday is St. Patrick’s Day. I’m Irish… and although not an actual holiday it’s still an excuse to drink some green beer and wear funny hats! 🙂

I do love a good St. Patty’s Day. So much fun! Ugh, that happens with my Halloween too. It’s like the kids are messing without even knowing.

For the most part I don’t mind holiday annoyances b/c well…HOLIDAYS!! So worth it…but the fireworks do startle both me and Piper!
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
I watched our neighbors fireworks for the 4th. It was fun!

I don’t mind the fireworks too much, when they go off when you expect to hear them. Sometimes people in my neighborhood set them off at Halloween (they shouldn’t but it’s happened). I hear you about the Christmas shopping rush and family get together. I like seeing my larger family but, a few of them can be annoying. Tomorrow I will be celebrating Canada Day, but as I have grown older, the holidays are more low-key.
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
Yeah, holidays are more low-key now that I am getting older. They are more relaxing which is nice.

I like fireworks when I’m wide awake. When I go to bed, I hate it when they’re still going on. I’ve never liked Easter egg hunts; even when I was a kid.
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
Yeah, it can suck when they wake you up but I sleep like the dead so… lol

I don’t mind most holiday annoyances, but when there are fireworks going on at 2 or 3 am….that is where I get a bit frustrated. I currently live in a college town, so it makes certain holidays a bit frustrating. Halloween…is weird with kids and candy though. Sometimes they come and other times they don’t, I never know how much candy I should actually buy. Because quite frankly there is no way I am eating all of that. 🙂 Great post. I do like holidays because of the family aspect of it.
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
We often have a lot of candy left over because we don’t know how many kids will show up either. I just take it to work or give it away to friends so I don’t eat it all myself. 🙂

Some kinds CAN be little shits. HAHAha This 4th will be really low-key. We’re gearing up for a move, so we will just be packing and hanging out at the house until the fireworks go off. It’s nice since they set them off behind our house and since there’s no houses there we can see the fireworks from our backyard. I will be sad when next year rolls around and I have to actually travel to see them. As for the fireworks going off randomly around the 4th, those scare me. I live in a severe drought area. All it takes is one spark and POOF! I’m always waiting for the sirens to notify people of a wildfire or something. Never had that fear until I moved to the desert. LoL
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
That’s so cool you can see the fireworks from your house. We can see ours too but it’s pretty far away still. I do worry about fire too. So far, so good.

I don’t really get kids coming to my door at Halloween. Mainly because my area is a little rural and they don’t want to end up as “real” ghosts thanks to our highway. Where I live there are no sidewalks, and a two lane road where people tend to drive aggressively. In fact two or three of last winters back out were from cars hitting power poles. In fact, the same pole near our house was hit twice… So needless to say most kids go the more densely people areas with slow traffic. It would be fun if we lived somewhere where we actually got people at our door on Halloween, and we always prepare just in case.
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
Hmmm, that might be nice to not have all those kids running around. Your road sounds scary though.

I have a very anxious dog, so while I like fireworks, I feel really bad for her. I don’t mind them happening over this Fourth of July weekend because we know it will happen, but all the other random times people let them off around this holiday? That can be annoying because it sets my dog off. Besides that, I’m pretty good with things. I like to shop early on for Christmas so I don’t end up in too much madness around that time. haha
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
Poor doggy. I do feel bad for the animals.
Christy LoveOfBooks
Fireworks don’t bother me either as long as it isn’t all night. We’re totally guilty of setting some off before the 4th. lol. It’s fireworks, man!
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
My dad sets them off too. I don’t cuz I don’t want to get in trouble. So I let him do it. lol

Haha I just love this! So yes, maybe some holidays have some annoying habits attached to them – but in general the spirit is awesome around holiday times. I love celebrating with everyone and being part of the happy feel community.
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
It is awesome to be a part of the holiday spirit.

I just love holidays – I get really into them. Christmas and Halloween are two of my favorites, but I also really love fireworks so July 4th and New Year’s are up there. I live out of the city limits though and my neighborhood does have some that shoot off after 12 am. I don’t because I usually have to work the next day and we have a lot of elderly in the neighborhood so that wouldn’t be appropriate.
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
It does suck when fireworks go off when you are trying to sleep. The only downside.
anna@herding cats & burning soup
I love the holidays so I’m pretty good with everything. The only things I hate with a passion are the bell ringers at every freaking store during Christmas. Hate them with a passion. And I turn out my light at Halloween because of the herd. Too much risk for escape. But it’s not really annoying since people just pass on by 🙂
Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)
Yeah, we have gone a couple years with lights out during Halloween and most of the kids respect that.
