A vampire never gets old. But neither do his enemies. When a figure from Ethan’s dark past makes a splashy debut in Chicago, Merit and her Master don’t know whether he’s friend or foe. But they’ll have to figure out soon, because trouble is brewing in the Windy City.
At an exclusive society soiree attended by the upper echelons of the human and supernatural worlds, Merit and Ethan barely stop the assassination of a guest. When the target turns out to be a shady businessman with a criminal edge, Merit suspects a human vendetta. But the assassins have fangs….
The connections to Chicago’s Houses go deeper than Merit knows, and even one wrong move could be her last….
I am so excited and honored to be a part of the Official Blog Tour for Dark Debt by Chloe Neill. I hope you enjoy my review of the book, the wonderful interview I got to have with Chloe, and the amazing giveaways at the end.
At A Glance
So freaking good!
The Good
I will admit, the last few books have been good but not amazing. So I was getting nervous for the series. Then Chloe gives us Dark Debt and blows my mind. We are right back to the series I am obsessed with.
The plot was so exciting and intense. We have someone big/bad/important from Ethan’s past coming into the picture and screwing things up. He’s creepy/charming, he’s scary, and he’s powerful. Then we have this new player screwing with the vampires in any way possible. Seriously, so much butt to kick and so little time. We get the action, we get the mystery, we get those emotional moments that make your heart melt. It was everything I wanted from this book and series.
Merit and Ethan are effing amazing. They just keep growing and getting closer with each book. Their relationship keeps this series interesting. I love how Ethan inserted himself into the investigation more this time. And Merit is still going strong, getting more mature and resilient with each new disaster.
I feel like the vampires as a whole are getting a better footing in this world. It’s excited to see their progression as a race. We even get more of Morgan, which was a nice. I stopped liking him a long time ago, but he is warming on me again. Then Catcher and Mallory do something crazy!!!!! So many changes. *wipes a tear away*
The Bad
Nothing too bad I can think of, maybe just slow in some spots. Like, I don’t need that much detail about Merit exercising.
The Snuggly
We get our tame but steamy sex scenes. Perfect for an urban fantasy that doesn’t need crazy sex, but something to keep things spicy.
Final Thoughts
One of the best books of the series. I enjoyed every minute of it. Highly recommended.
Author Interview
Jennifer: If you could choose one character from your Chicagoland Vampires series to have dinner with, who would you choose and what would the two of you eat?
Chloe: Oh, definitely Merit! Our love of good food is pretty similar, so we could share that over a meal. We’d probably go for something classically Chicago — like Italian hot beefs, maybe followed by a Portillo’s Cake Shake. So low calorie, definitely. 😉
Jennifer: Do you have any say over your book covers?
Chloe: Kind of. My editor and I provide the art department with a sense of what the book will be about, and some plot points that could be touched on in the books–like the crossroads on the cover of BITING COLD. We also suggest poses, places in Chicago, etc. So my input is on the front end, and then the artist (Tony Mauro) works his magic!
Jennifer: Do you have any advice for beginning writers?
Chloe: Read as much as you can, from lots of different kinds of genres, even ones that challenge you. The more you read, the better a writer you’ll become, because you begin to internalize grammar and structure. You also simply learn more things about the world and the people in it, which helps you create worlds and scenarios for your own characters.
Jennifer: Can you share with us something off your bucket list?
Chloe: Personally, I’d love to visit Scotland and Ireland. Professionally, I’d love to hit the top spot on the NYT Bestseller list. That’s very much a “stretch” goal, but I like to keep it in mind.
Thanks for having me today!

I am so excited this series is still going strong! I read the first two (maybe three, I can’t remember now!) books and loved them. I really should pick it back up again.

I am so behind on this series and I really hate that I’m the only one. My cousin got me the first book years ago but I just haven’t picked it up yet.

Jaclyn Canada
So glad you enjoyed this one so much! I’ve heard a lot of great things about the series, but haven’t picked it up yet though it’s been on my to-read list for quite some time. I love bucket lists and finding new things to include in mine! I think you should always have a hard-to-attain goal on there just as inspiration if nothing else. It helps you enjoy all the little things you do get to mark off the list. Mine is to be an animator at Pixar.
Jennifer Bielman
I think you would LOVE this series. Animator for Pixar? Now that would be cool.

It’s so great that after so many books it’s still that good. I haven’t read the series yet but I have the 3 first books. I need to try! I know, I’m so late! Great review!
Jennifer Bielman
OMG, you are crazy for just holding on to gold!!! Read them, read them!

I love that Chloe gets a say in the cover. I hate seeing a cover that has nothing to do with the actual story within. Aside from the model change, I’ve always loved the covers of the CV series. Now I know why.
Jennifer Bielman
I always thought the covers have matched really well too.
Amanda D
I enjoyed the review and the interview. This is one of my favorite vampire series. The covers are awesome!
Jennifer Bielman
Mine too!

I’m very happy this installment was so good in your opinion, Jennifer! I’ve had trouble with this series ever since the BIG THING happened, and even more so since it un-happened… I do love Merit, though, so I’m hanging in there, far behind 🙂
Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway!
Jennifer Bielman
LOL, I know what you mean. it was an odd thing to happen but I am over it now.
Olivia
Glad to know you were able to love this one so much! It sounds like there was a lot of action, enough romance to keep you satisfied and a great plot. This sounds like my kind of story, and I love when a series that might have been going downhill suddenly backlashes!
Jennifer Bielman
It really was good overall.
