Welcome to Bookish Blatherings, a Bad Bird Reads feature where I ramble about bookish or bloggerish things and hopefully you will join in on the discussion.

So some of you might have already heard that Amazon has announced that there is a critical software update for the Kindle. At first I didn’t think much of it but then I called Amazon just in case, and yes, this update is important. If you don’t update you will lose very important features on your Kindle and your WiFi connection might get messed up. I think it depends on which Kindle you have. But from what I read and what the Amazon representative said, you don’t want to lose any of these features. Your Kindle will almost be useless by March 22nd. Here is the list of Kindles that need the updated (this list is from Yahoo News):

  • Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
  • Kindle 2nd Generation (2009)
  • Kindle DX 2nd Generation (2009)
  • Kindle Keyboard 3rd Generation (2010)
  • Kindle 4th Generation (2011)
  • Kindle 5th Generation (2012)
  • Kindle Touch 4th Generation (2011)
  • Kindle Paperwhite 5th Generation (2012)

Yup, all later models, like mine. You newbie Kindle people are fine. Lucky bastards!!

How to update your Kindle: From your home screen select Menu then select Sync and Check for Items. The update should start automatically. Plug in your Kindle because this update will take some time.

For some reason, mine was already updated. Just to make sure, I had the Amazon representative check to see if my software was the right version. She had me go to Menu and select Settings, tap Menu again, then tap Device Info (this might be different for different Kindles). Look at your Firmware Version number. To find out if your version is the right one, go to the Amazon Help page, find your Kindle, click the Get Help with your Kindle link, then click Kindle Software Updates. This page will let you know which update version is the most recent, which is the one you need.

I hope this helps. Sorry if this is a boring post but for Kindle people, this shit is scary. I hate technology, it’s always trying to screw us. LOL.

And now, here are some funny talking animal videos!

Ty for the heads up! Mine is first gen & I’ve been hoping for an update for the longest time! I thought they’re phasing out my dino reader lol

I just couldn’t believe my Kindle was that old. This update brought out my kindle’s age and my kindle is not happy.

My kindled updated, but thanks for the update. I don’t always trust automatic updates. I’ve had a few that didn’t update before, so I like to know when I need update just so I check to make sure that they go through. I also love the animal videos. 🙂

I think you’re saving quite a few people by posting this! I’m just double checking, but kindle fire’s are fine, right? Oh, and I have seen a few of these and the FIRST ONE IS MY FAVOURITE. I found it years ago but I watch it whenever I want a good laugh ahaha

    Heh at the talking animals.

Lots of stuff happening lately with ebooks that solidifies my stance on preferring print. You just really don’t control or own those ebooks you buy. That was nice of you to pass along the info to people!

    • Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)

I do hate that I don’t own my ebooks but I love how they take no space up!

  5. Melissa (Books and Things)

I have an old one and that is good to know. I remember when it was acting slow one day but was fine after that. Now I know why. It was updating. Mine was at the bottom on the settings area. At the very bottom… in case anyone else has a 3rd gen. 😀

Thanks for the post. I just got a kindle so I think it is fine, but there was an update, so maybe I should update just in case.

    • Jennifer (Bad Bird Reads)

Updating is always good no matter what. Unless you have an iPhone, then it just makes the iPhone useless. lol.

I am a kindle noob and love my little Fire. Thankfully this didn’t affect me, but so nice of you to share. Love the videos..animals always make me giggle and smile

These videos are so just fun. No matter how much I watch them.

I’ve clearly been living under a rock because I didn’t know this. Thanks for the heads up on this. I don’t even want to think about how devastated I’d be if I woke up one morning and my Kindle wasn’t working the way it should. Eeesh.

I know. It’s scary that such an important update can exist. If it wasn’t for facebook I wouldn’t have known.

  9. Jaclyn Canada

Ha! Those are some funny videos. I enjoyed the laugh 😀 My kindle did the update on it’s own as well, but I had to do Zane’s for him. I hope we got it all done right, but I’ll check out the Amazon Help page just in case.
