Seven years ago, the Veil that separates us from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil’s Isle.
Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused…
Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack — in full view of the French Quarter — Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs—even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.
As more and more Sensitives fall prey to their magic, and unleash their hunger on the city, Claire and Liam must work together to save New Orleans, or else the city will burn…
Author Interview
Hello, everyone!
Jennifer: Hi, Chloe! What inspired the concept for The Veil?
Chloe: Actually, three different planned stories. I’d been wanting, among other things, to write a darker story set in the south, and I’ve always loved New Orleans. My editor and I discussed my story ideas, and she suggested I combine two of the three. And boom–the Devil’s Isle series was born!
Jennifer: What is your favorite non-writing activity?
Chloe: Making pretty much anything. I love to create things, and tend to rotate between crafts–baking, knitting, sketching. I’m currently practicing watercolor, which I am really bad at. But it’s so fun to exercise a completely different part of my brain! I also love watching snarky animated TV shows.
Jennifer: What is one item on your bucket list?
Chloe: I’d love to go to Scotland, and be a #1 New York Times bestseller. Not sure if either of those will ever happen, but a girl’s got to dream! 😀
Jennifer: What is your favorite supernatural creature?
Chloe: Oooh, that’s a tough one. I’m partial to vampires, of course, but I find angels and the mythos surrounding them really fascinating.
Jennifer: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Chloe: Very, very late. I always hated writing in high school and college, but after a bad break up, and reading pretty much all the urban fantasy on the market at the time, I started writing. That was about 2005. SOME GIRLS BITE, the first Chicagoland Vampires novel, was my second manuscript, which I wrote in 2006. I’ve been writing ever since!
Thanks so much for having me today!

Jennifer Bielman
Happy you enjoyed them.

With all the great buzz this book is getting, she just might hit the #1 spot. Whether or not that happens, congrats for writing a fantastic series debut.

I love the sound of this one! New Orleans is a fun setting. I like to create things as well, even if I’m horrible at what I’m trying to work with at the time. Great interview 😀 Thanks for sharing!
Jennifer Bielman
My review is coming soon. The best part of the book was the setting.

I love reading author interviews and I’ve been seeing lots of positive things about this one online. I am so excited to read this book!
I love her Chicagoland Vampires series, so my hopes are high, but I have complete faith! 🙂
Jennifer Bielman
I love her vamp series too. I will review this book soon.
Nathan
I love Chole Neil’s Chicagoland Vampire series. It was her books that introduced me to Urban Fantasy. Before that I thought that a book set in a modern urban setting couldn’t be any good, I was wrong. I mean to read her new series. Best of luck for her.

Books featuring magic have always been a favorite of mine and I love Chloe’s writing, so this is going to the top of my tbr.
Jennifer Bielman
I am in the same boat. love me some magic in my books.
Kristin
I want to try watercoloring. It would be awesome if there was an event like paint night but instead of acrylics they did water colors instead. It’s just so intimidating. Are you using how-to videos or are you just free-styling on your own?
Jennifer Bielman
Wow, that sounds so fun.
Francesca
I love the fact she likes Scotland (Outalnder, here we come!)
Jennifer Bielman
Yummmmy, Outlander!
Olivia Roach
I have heard so many wonderful things about this book, and how the main character is definitely a kick-butt kinda girl. I have it on my TBR now and really want to read it at some point. Nice interview!
Jennifer Bielman
I hope you get a chance to read it.
miki

Jennifer Bielman
Hope you love it when you do. It wasn’t really for me.

Any characters hanging around the French Quarter can’t be ALL bad. LOL I love to sketch naked trees. I am not very good at drawing, so I do a lot of photography.
Jennifer Bielman
I love photography too. 🙂
